New Year’s resolutions: Get Fit. Lose weight. Be nicer to the neighbor who lets their dog go constantly in our yard and oh yeah, get organized.
There are all kinds of resolutions, but let’s be honest how many last till the flowers and candy show up in February? After a nice long break in my de-cluttering exploits it is time to get back in the swing of things and get my life back in order. Hopefully you all have at least looked around your house and thought, “You know I could really use SOMETHING to get this under control! Starting out is the hardest part. If we knew how to do it, would we have ended up in this situation to begin with? Well, probably. But there is nothing like having a group of woman at your house insisting on seeing the hall closet featured on your blog to keep you on track (and it was sort of cool in a Rock Star kind of adoration way, so thanks!).
Everyone needs a some ideas to get them pointed in the right direction and my friend J. F. has been kind enough to forward a link for ways to help start to looking at your clutter and find a way to either use what you have or find the strength to let it go. http://unclutterer.com is a great site and highlights some important reminders that all things around you should fall into the following categories:
Be Useful-Are you ever really going to use the cool pineapple corer? If you are holding on to something just in case and that situation hasn’t happened in the past 2 years, it’s probably not going to happen. DONATE IT.
Be Beautiful-Your house should make you happy. If that totally useless ceramic elephant makes you smile, then keep it. Just make sure that the things that you hold onto contribute to your happiness; not result in anxiety.
Be Complete-Don’t get bogged down in projects that you “may” do sometime in the future. If you can’t find time to do it now, are you really going to have time in a month?
Is The Whole Family on Board?-Make this a family undertaking. One person cannot take on the clutter of the whole family. If everyone cannot be engaged, this simply will not work. Simple, yes. Easy, well it should be but not always the case.
So in order to make sure that I stay on track and hopefully get you all motivated as well, I am going to start using this great daily idea calendar to help me get moving. Thank you to the wonderful website mysimplelife.com!!!! http://www.mysimplerlife.com/2012.htm. This calendar breaks down each day into easy, quick and possibly life changing tasks, best of all its free!
In the upcoming weeks, I hope to tackle some of the questions you all have challenged me with including how to handle out of control mail, magazine storage and playroom delimas. I also would love for you to share some interesting, cost effective strategies that you have used as well.
So here to a wonderful, creative and less cluttered New Year!!!
